Reference vs. Search

The distinction Hyperwords makes between search and reference was born out of a need to not have one massively long menu item for 'search' or 'Reference'. The difference is that when you look something up in 'Reference' you expect to find it and the reference work will be organized. When you search for something you don't know where you will find it or where it is and the search results have not necessarily been pre-organized.

Please note that many of the 'Reference' are off by default. You will need to go to 'Settings' and 'Layout' to turn them on.

A Reference look-up example

Let's say you are reading about the Hyperwords Project and you come across the inspiration and spiritual father of the project, Doug Engelbart. And you don't remember who he is. No problem. You may just want to highlight his name and choose 'Reference/Wikipedia' and you will get a small window with his Wikipedia entry.

Just stop for a minute...

You can also just stop and hover over the reference you want to use, such as 'Wikipedia' in the above example. You will then get the results in the menu.
